How to learn riding a bike (On two Wheels) in 60 Mins or
less (Kids 5-6 Years)
- Find a park with a large plot of flat grass (1 Acre or more). A football field is a good option. Make sure the grass is not too tall.
- Buy a 7 gear 16/20 inch bicycle from your local store depending on the size of your kid. If you have a single gear bike it will be very hard to pedal on grass.
- Buy or make sure you have Helmet, Pads for elbow/knees, gloves, and have your kid wear socks and comfortable tennis.
- Plan to spend 2-3 hours running/practicing the lesson. More will let you exhausted.
- Bring a video camera. You will want to remember how he/she did it.
- Preparation:
- Set the bike : Shift the gears to the highest rear position. This let your kid easily pedal on soft grass.
- Before you begin: Go to the place you will start them riding. Offer 4 tips:
ii. No matter what, do not stop pedaling.
iii. Allways look ahead. Do not look back.
iv. Position their right foot in the start position. Up ahead in the pedal.
7- Make sure you hold the bike at the beginning, but as he/she pedals, release by 5 seconds, and see if balance is being attained. If your kid goes in a turn, do not correct, let them make the turn. Do not try to go in a straight line. As they ride, they will learn how to balance. Pedaling is key for them to have a vertical posture. And remember, for them to ride, they need speed, so make sure they are pedaling at with enough speed.
8- In about 4-5 tries, your kid must be starting to do it on their own.
9- Here you can introduce another command. How to To break.
10- What you achieve with this technique is to have your kid start learning the skill in a soft surface, so they are not worried they are going to bump their head while learning. Is important to know that once they’ve learned how to start – ride – stop, they should move immediately to a paved road. This is because they need to try the pavement as soon as they’ve learned the basics. If not, fear will keep them from riding on hard surfaces and it will take longer for you to teach them.
